Updated over 2 months ago

Overview

This article helps users understand how to best scan a drivers license when adding a new signer, credible witness or document witness to your Notary eJournal

What devices are capable of scanning a drivers license?

ID scanning is available on iOS and Android devices, meaning phones and tablets that can operate our application and have the required hardware (a camera).

What information fields can be pulled from a drivers license scan?

The following fields are available for you to select as something that will be collected when scanning an ID or omitted.

  • ID Serial Number

  • ID Issuance Date

  • ID Expiration Date

  • Date of Birth

  • Address (Includes all address fields)

  • Issuance State

For more information about managing which fields you may want to omit during a scan, please check out this article

When is ID scanning available in the app?

Scanning an ID can happen at any point in which you are adding a signer or document witness to an entry, adding credible witnesses, or creating new clients in your master client list. Any screen that has ID information fields will provide the functionality to scan the drivers license

How to scan a drivers license

  1. Once you open the ID scanning module (see "When is ID scanning available" above), you'll see on-screen instructions to help guide you

  2. We recommend starting with the camera close to the barcode, then slowly move the camera away from the barcode until it is in focus and captures the scan

  3. Utilize the flashlight tool if necessary to activate the camera's flash

  4. When a scan is successful, the scanning dialogue will automatically close and populate the ID fields with all appropriate preferences (see ID scanning preferences here)

Note - the autofocus systems vary dramatically across the variety of devices that our application supports. For this reason, there isn't 1 perfect way to line up the barcode. This is why we recommend starting with the camera close to the barcode to see if the camera will focus at that depth, and then slowly moving it away from the barcode until you see the barcode as the focus point (at which point it should capture the scan)

The barcode to scan is circled in green. Sometimes there are multiple barcodes on the back of an ID (as seen in this picture).

The barcode can be scanned vertically or horizontally

Sample of scanning a barcode horizontally. Notice how when the scan begins, the ID isn't fully in focus. Slowly moving away from (or towards) the ID until it is in focus will help with the scan

Sample of scanning a barcode vertically. Scanning vertically might help you get the ID to a suitable distance away from the camera for better focus
